Currently in design is a new, state-of-the-art, 268,000 square foot, Science Laboratory Facility for the University of Tennessee’s Knoxville Campus on the corner of Cumberland Avenue and 16th Street at the site of the existing Sophronia Strong Hall buildings and the 18th century Cowan Cottage. The facility will provide new, more centrally located homes for the Anthropology and Earth and Planetary Science departments that include modern research and teaching laboratories, offices, administrative spaces, support spaces, and a range of learning spaces for both undergraduate and graduate level students that place an emphasis on collaborative learning settings. The building will provide new and improved teaching laboratories for general biology and chemistry that will be built to support the changing pedagogical direction of general biology and chemistry as well as general classrooms that will be used by the wider university population.
