A new facility designed to combine the physical and mental health services as well as the health education-related Safety, Environment and Education Center (SEE Center) into a single facility capable of providing outpatient health services and information for the students, staff and administration of the University of Tennessee. The two-story building with a partial basement will be predominantly brick - two colors of brick are proposed to help define distinct volumes and to provide additional visual interest. Insulated glazing and spandrel panels will be installed in both pre-finished aluminum storefront and curtain wall systems. In order to facilitate sustainable sun shading and use of natural light, smaller punched windows are proposed for the south and west elevations while the amount of glazing on the north and east elevations are more expansive. The main level houses most of the functions of the Health Services user group. The upper level houses the Counseling Center user group and the SEE Center user group. The upper floor also includes a large common meeting room. The lower level houses mainly storage spaces and building services. As proposed, the design encompasses 96,232 square feet. The site is currently parking lot and had to have special consideration since it was home to "The Rock" a campus landmark of tremendous tradition and affection. The facility's footprint is roughly square and is oriented so that the main entry occurs along historic Volunteer Boulevard.
