The JICS / ORCAS facility is one of several new construction projects which are intended to enhance and upgrade the capabilities of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These projects are implementing the laboratory's mission of being a world-class research center. This particular building was designed for two distinct user groups; the Oak Ridge Consolidated Universities and the Computational Sciences research department of the National Lab. The 52,000 sq. ft. building provides offices and computer research labs for both user groups. The building was designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's standards for LEED (Leading Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Design features include a large two-story light well, which provides internal natural illumination for interior office and lab spaces. Other features of the project include an energy star roof, highly reflective concrete, extensive use of recycled building materials, and design features that enhanced the use of alternative transportation for the staff.
