The Joint Institute for Computational Sciences / Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies (JICS / ORCAS) facility is one of several construction projects intended to enhance and upgrade the capabilities of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Together these projects implement the laboratory's mission of being a world-class research center. This particular building was designed for two distinct user groups; the Oak Ridge Consolidated Universities and the Computational Sciences research department of the National Laboratory. The 52,000 sq. ft. building provides offices and computer research laboratories for both user groups. The building was designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's standards for LEED (Leading Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Design features include a large two-story light well, which provides internal natural illumination for interior office and lab spaces. Other features of the project include an energy star roof, highly reflective concrete, extensive use of recycled building materials, and design features that enhanced the use of alternative transportation for the staff.
